This unique jewelry began as an experiment by stream ecologist Ben Stout to see what variety of materials caddis fly larva would use to build their cases. When Kathy saw the intricate and beautiful patterns of their cases she realized, "This is art!" After three years of hard work (and many failed experiments) the Stouts were able to construct a simulated stream in their workshop and raise up to 7,000 caddis fly larva. In early summer they put crushed semi-precious gemstones in the tanks and the larva quickly go to work building gorgeous cases. When the adult caddis flies emerge and fly away in the fall, Kathy carefully collects the cases and treats them with an epoxy to preserve them and make them crush-proof. She then designs earrings and necklaces incorporating the cases, accented with sterling silver or 14k gold-filled findings, Swarovski crystals and semi-precious stones. Each piece of jewelry is guaranteed for life and is as original as it is beautiful. Kathy and Ben (and their little workers) were even featured in National Geographic magazine as well as on the Animal Planet television channel!
